How to Layer Bedding Like a Show Home Stylist

How To Layer Bedding

Walk into any show home and the bed is always the centrepiece of the bedroom — perfectly layered, impossibly plump, and styled to make you want to climb straight in. The good news is that achieving that look is not as complicated as it seems. With the right layers and a few simple techniques, you can create a bed that looks like it belongs in a luxury hotel.

Start with a Quality Fitted Sheet

The foundation of any beautifully made bed is a crisp, well-fitted sheet. Choose a thread count of at least 200 for a smooth, comfortable feel. White or soft neutral tones work best for that clean, aspirational look.

Add a Duvet or Comforter

Choose a duvet that is slightly oversized for your bed — this creates that generous, hotel-style drape over the sides. A tog rating of 10.5 is ideal for year-round use in the UK. Shake it out well before making the bed to ensure it is evenly distributed.

Layer with a Throw

A throw folded neatly across the foot of the bed adds colour, texture, and visual interest. Choose a material that contrasts with your duvet — a chunky knit throw over a smooth cotton duvet, or a velvet throw over a linen duvet, both work beautifully.

Build Up the Pillows

The key to a show-home pillow arrangement is layering. Start with your sleeping pillows at the back, then add a row of square European pillows in front, and finish with two or three decorative cushions at the front. Odd numbers of cushions tend to look more natural and relaxed.

The Finishing Touch

Step back and assess. Tuck in any loose edges, plump the pillows, and adjust the throw so it sits at a slight angle. A small bedside lamp switched on creates a warm glow that makes the whole arrangement look even more inviting.
