Finding the right dining table for a small space is one of the most common challenges in home furnishing. You want something that seats enough people for everyday use and entertaining, without dominating the room or making it feel cramped. The good news is that there are some excellent solutions available.
Round Tables
A round dining table is often the best choice for a small dining room or kitchen-diner. With no corners to navigate around, it takes up less visual space and allows for easier movement around the room. A round table also encourages conversation, as everyone can see and speak to everyone else easily.
Extendable Tables
An extendable dining table is the ultimate space-saving solution. In its compact form, it is small enough for everyday use. When you have guests, you can extend it to seat significantly more people. Look for tables with a smooth, easy extension mechanism and leaves that store neatly away.
Wall-Mounted Drop-Leaf Tables
For the very smallest spaces, a wall-mounted drop-leaf table is a brilliant solution. When not in use, it folds flat against the wall, taking up virtually no space. When you need it, it provides a proper dining surface for two to four people.
Choosing the Right Size
As a general guide, allow at least 60cm of table width per person, and ensure there is at least 90cm of clear space between the edge of the table and any wall or obstruction, to allow for comfortable movement. In a very small room, a table for two to four people is often the most practical choice.
